Although he left this world eleven years ago, his presence continues to guide me each and every day. Born into modest circumstances, my father possessed an extraordinary ability to see opportunity where others saw obstacles. Resourcefulness was simply part of who he was. Driven by determination, faith, and an entrepreneurial spirit, he created opportunities not only for himself, but for our entire family.
Dad was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. His greatest legacy was not measured by what he achieved for himself, but by what he inspired in his children. Every one of us inherited his remarkable work ethic, his passion for life, and his unwavering belief that with perseverance and ingenuity, almost anything is possible. To say that “it’s in our blood” is not an exaggeration — it is our truth. Underpinning everything he did was his deep and abiding faith in God, his true North Star. It shaped the values by which he lived and raised his family, passing on principles of integrity, compassion, resilience, and purpose that continue to guide us today.
Despite the demands of providing for a family of seven children, Dad was never absent from our lives. Behind his tireless work ethic was a man who took his role as husband and father very seriously. Being the head of our household was not simply a responsibility he fulfilled; it was central to who he was. Through his steadfast presence alone, he gave each of us an enduring sense of security, stability, and confidence. His loyalty and devotion to our mother were unwavering and provided all of us with an enduring example of commitment and partnership. More than anything, Dad cared deeply for his family. His profound sense of responsibility was motivated not by obligation, but by love — and it was this quiet devotion that truly defined the man he was.
Dad was also extraordinarily generous, particularly toward those who had less. Having known modest beginnings himself, he never lost sight of the importance of helping others. Whether through financial support or, perhaps more importantly, by giving freely of his time, he consistently went out of his way to lift others up. He believed deeply in the value of community, kindness, and showing up for people when they needed it most. Despite his many accomplishments, he never took himself too seriously. He met life’s inevitable challenges with optimism, humility, and an uncanny ability to laugh — especially at himself. He worked hard, but he also embraced life wholeheartedly, bringing enthusiasm, joy, and adventure to everything he did. His zest for life was infectious, and all of his children are living proof that “the apple truly doesn’t fall far from the tree”.
This weekend, and indeed every day of my life, I give full credit to the influence, guidance, love, and example of my father for so many of the gifts I have been fortunate enough to receive. His legacy lives on not only in what he created, but in the lives of those he loved, supported, and shaped so profoundly. He taught us that success is measured not only by what we accomplish, but by the values we uphold, the people we care for, and the love we leave behind.
