When I moved to Nova Scotia nine years ago and began the transformation of the motel, Debbie came highly recommended to me as an exceptionally meticulous painter — someone whose attention to detail was second to none. To this day, Debbie still laughs that I hired her after our very first meeting, especially since she openly explained that because of her physical limitations, she would need help moving ladders, paint cans, and anything requiring heavy lifting. In my mind, however, that simply created the perfect opportunity for me to become even more hands-on in the creative process… or perhaps, as Debbie might say, to keep an even closer eye on her work.
Needless to say, we got to know each other very quickly, as Debbie soon discovered just how obsessive and uncompromising I can be when it comes to creativity and design. What began as a working relationship evolved into one of the deepest and most meaningful friendships of my life. Debbie is truly at the heart of what this motel has become today. Quite literally, she has touched every inch of this place with her care, talent, and dedication. I have been beyond blessed to have such a committed, passionate, and yes — equally obsessive — creative partner by my side throughout this journey. Through every challenge, setback, and storm along the way, Debbie has also been an anchor for me personally. Her loyalty, strength, humour, and unwavering presence have meant more to me than words could ever properly express.
