Reconnecting with my father’s younger sister, now in her mid-eighties, has opened a deeply meaningful window into my late father’s life — not through history books or photographs, but through the intimate memories and loving perspective of someone who knew him from the very beginning. Hosting ma tante Claudette from Timmins, Ontario, where my father was born and raised, (along with my cousin Anna from Ottawa and her daughter Heaven Leigh), has given me renewed sense of family connection that I did not realize I had been missing.
Like my father, ma tante Claudette carries an old-fashioned common sense, warmth, and humility that feels increasingly rare today. Listening to her memories of growing up in Northern Ontario has been both fascinating and deeply moving. Through her stories, I have come to better understand the roots of my father’s character, values, and spirit. The richness of her recollections — of family life, hardship, resilience, and joy — has brought tremendous love into my heart and has made this reconnection feel like an unexpected and precious gift.
